1908,
oil on canvas,
27 x 23 3/4 in.,

[Foundation Collection]
Ary painted this the year after he came to the United States while working for Brodkey and Goodsite Jewelers. Ary would set up an easel in the back of the store and paint during the few leisure hours he had. Israel Brodkey was the father of Max Brodkey, one of the owners of the store. He was Ary 's great-uncle. See chapter "The Back of the Store" in Ary's Reminiscences. Israel Brodkey is the great-uncle to whom he refers.
The painting was given to the Foundation by Max Brodkey's granddaughter, Tillie Brodkey Grueskin and her husband Zeke Grueskin, in 1968.
